I discovered the art of Chris Ritson through Instagram and I felt immediately drawn to it since it lays at the intersection of many interesting topics. Mushroom cultivation, biomaterials, waste reduction, medicinal mushrooms, and natural art mix perfectly in his work to create beautiful pieces that challenge the notion of what art truly is and how it can be used to convey ideas about the implications of our impact on Earth. This artist from Hawaii has worked with algae, crystals, and paper and now he literally grows his pieces using fungi and the final products of his work are astonishing.
Last Fall, I found a mushroom egg. Yes, that’s a thing. A mushroom egg! (It is actually the inmature form of the fruiting body, covered by a universal veil. But, colloquially, it’s called the egg stage of the mushroom). Finding of the egg: It was growing in a grassy area in a hardwood forest. It really looked like someone left an egg in the middle of the forest, and that caught my eye.

They are stealing our future and we are doing nothing about it. The government and the corporations told us that as long as we recycle, save water, and carry our groceries in reusable bags, the planet will be alright. They made us believe that they care, but they lied to us. The world is dying and it is on us to do something to fix it, because they won’t. We are at a time in history in which urgent measurements must be taken to avoid a global environmental disaster. Fortunately for us, one useful tool to our world’s future may be right beneath our feet.
